Welcome to my blog!

I will start way back when…

We all start somewhere right?. When I under under 10 years old I was never a big girl, I was healthy. I hit age 10 and from this age, I struggled with some rough years.. This was difficult for me mentally, emotionally but also physically. I played sports all throughout my teen and preteen years and I was never the fastest kid on the team, or the quickest. My dad was the coach of my soccer teams growing up and I was often put in goal, well because I was a damn good goalie, and lets be honest, like I said I was never the quickest on the field. I never ate greasy take out food or anything deep fried. My parents did not keep too much junk food in our house. My problem was I liked to eat. A lot. All the time. I began to gain weight at a young age and part was due to my constant eating however, part was also genetics. My mom who is a very petite small woman now went through the same body issues when she was in her preteen years. The genetics not being in my favor, combined with the fact that I ate. A lot didn’t leave me with much room to feel good about myself at such a young age
Here is a picture of me at 13 years old, with my brother. I was 11 years old, and my brother was 13 years old here.  We were on vacation in Isreal.
Here I am in the pink shirt and black pants at age 13. I was in 7th grade pictured here. I remember this picture, and I remember the exact moment; how I felt standing next to my smaller, thinner friends. It really hurt me to look at that picture and to try to comprehend that I acutally looked like that. I was happy and bubbly on the outside, but inside, I was struggling trying to find ‘ME’
Here I am at age 14. The changes began.

Around this age (14) is when I started realizing that I wanted to change my body, but more importantly my life.  I was taught about portion control and eating smaller meals throughout the entire day. When High School hit, I also picked up my workouts a LOT. My mom introduced me to Golds Gym, which is where she and my dad workout, and at first I started going twice a week after school. Soon enough, I was picking it up to 3-5 times a week! I was a two season athlete playing both Field hockey and I did crew (rowing) for 2 years. When I was not playing sports, You could find me at Golds after school–always.

Me and my friend when I was 17 years old in High School.
I became a avid Spinner, spinning twice a week with my dad and I also began to pick up weight training. I knew the benefits and always envied the women who worked so damn hard in the weight room. I didn’t want to be one of those girls who was a slave to the cardio machines, so I started teaching myself, with the help of my mom and some magazines. Everything about fitness and working out intrigued me and I was always picking up the latest magazine or subscribing to all different nutrition magazines and publications. Like I mentioned earlier, my parents helped me more than I could imagine. They, being dedicated, focused, fitness people themselves started working out with me, and it became such a strong memory of mine. To this day, I have my parents to thank to introducing me and motivating me more than I could by myself to get into the health/wellness world. I LOVE working out with my parents. They are my motivators and biggest inspirations.

My Love for fitness and nutrition brought into the field I work today. I went to Ithaca College and studied Exercise Science. I also hold a minor in Nutrition. I knew that by combining my two passion, this would put me on a road to help others, motivate, inspire and change lives.  I worked very hard in College. I was passionate about the courses that I took; kinesiology, anatomy, biology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, human nutrition. I loved every minute of my labs and classes. I would sometimes leave classes wanting to learn even more.
College-Freshman Year, 2005

The college years which acutally were VERY good to me, which is the opposite for most. I learned how to portion out what I ate and also realized that I had the most amazing self control around food. It was more a game for me. Since I ate in the dining hall most of the meals, with everything at my finger tips, I would choose the healthier options and not even be tempted to touch the crappy, greasy filled food. I began seeing food as fuel and eating the proper balance of foods to fuel me for my workouts.

I still take this with me today. When I go to a buffet and instead of choosing the pancakes, bacon and home fries, I choose the oatmeal, fruit and yogurt. My pet peeve is when people tell me “Oh, you are being so good!!” I am not being “good” by eating this food-this food is what I eat, its what tastes good to me, and what gives the proper fuel and energy I need for me.

Who Am I and My Philosophy

These days, I am still taking what I have learned from my BS in Exercise Science in college and applying it each and everyday at work. I work as a master Trainer downtown Boston as well as Coach for Cathy Savage Fitness. I wake up everyday beyond grateful that I truly love what I do.

My focus is strength training with a strong emphasis on functional movement screening and postural awareness.  The functional movement screenings will indicate the biggest problems in the human body relative to its movement. Similar to anti-virus software for your computer, designed to keep it running smoothly, the movement screening for the body is designed for the same purpose in your body. FMS can identify the least mobile, the least stable, and also the most asymmetrical areas of your body. I help to introduce corrective strategies for my clients worst problems, and as a result the body performs better and is less likely to break down.I share and demonstrate the importance of exercise, proper form while strength training and complimenting their hard efforts with healthy eating. My clients learn to perform better, gain strength, FEEL better, and listen to their bodies all while staying pain free! To see my clients reap the benefits of their hard work makes everything worth it!

Exercise is not only physical but mental as well, and it is so important for people to get in touch with themselves. Dig deep-find what what triggers you and what makes you work hard, give it all you got and never look back. Whether its working out to lose weight, get healthy, fit into that little black dress or making a lifetime commitment to a lifestyle change–DO THIS FOR YOU. Keep a journal, write down your workouts and reward yourself constantly with non food related items.

Fitness Competition Experience/Cathy Savage Fitness Coach

Under the expert guidance of Cathy Savage and her team, I have competed in my first FAP show at Mohegan Sun in April, 2011. This was a milestone that I spent more than 20 years working towards. The support, camaraderie, tools and wealth of knowledge the CSF staff shares made the competition a life-changing experience. I not only transformed my body, but also my outlook, my  life, and my mind. I learned things about herself, limits I could surpass and self-esteem I never in my life felt before. Now, more than two years later and 5 shows under her belt I could not be more honored to be a Cathy Savage Fitness Coach.

With each of my clients, Naomi shares the importance of exercise and healthy habits complimenting their hard efforts with healthy eating. Naomi is a true believer in balance when it comes to working out. She believes that to transform your life and achieve ultimate health it is not about losing weight or how many calories you eat each day, rather it is about changing your outlook on how you see exercise and food. Properly balanced, these two things are not a threat, but instead are powerful tools used to achieve ultimate health.

FOOD
I love to cook. Everything and anything. I find such joy and comfort in making new creative dishes from scratch. I play with ingredients, spices, new products and hopefully always get a positive outcome! I love cooking for others and seeing the looks on their faces when they take their first delicious bite.  It is a passion, engraved deep within me and I will continue to cook well into my elder years. I hope you enjoy what I stir up in the kitchen!

So, this is me! Follow me as I workout, eat healthy, cook up some delicious recipes and have fun!

Just came across your blog and wanted to say hi! I also graduated with a BS in Exercise Science and a minor in Nutrition. Only I unfortunately did not puruse a career in that field. I’m regretting it now though! 🙂 Can’t wait to read more!

Hi there!! Thank you so much for leaving such a sweet comment on my blog!! 🙂 I have to say the same thing to you – HOW have I never seen YOUR blog?!?! So glad to have found it!! It is so adorable!! I too was a chubby teen. I didn’t lose my weight until the end of college though. Then had some disordered eating and became obsessed with getting as small as possible. Then that backfired and now I’m a little overweight again. Anyway, long story short, I want to lose about 20-25 pounds to get back to my happy healthy weight, but have now encountered some health issues – underactive thyroid – which is making it very difficult.

Your pictures are so pretty – what pretty blue eyes you have!! Looking forward to following your blog!!

Right now I’m toying with the idea of getting ACSM certified in personal training and leaving my desk job. Did you do the ACSM personal trainer 3 day workshop? That’s what I’m thinking of signing up for…

Hi! Thanks for sharing your story. I can really relate to the beginning of your story when it came to being an adolescent and not necessarily eating unhealthy things, but having NO idea what portion size was. I think that understanding the appropriate amount to eat definitely a common problem among young people, especially during such transitional stages in life.

    Love your blog header! 🙂

  12. Jenn says:

Thanks for commenting on my post about Janetha and Momma B. It’s always fun to find new blogs and I’m surprised I haven’t see yours before. You have a great story!

Sounds like we share similar workout philosophies. I love burpees too! Well I’m not sure if I *love* burpees but I love what burpees do for my body.

    Hi Naomi!

I just came across your blog and I think it’s fabulous! I come from a similar weight gain/loss background as you; as a kid, I did tons of physical activity but didn’t know anything about portion sizes, and they definitely caught up with me! Eventually I discovered my love for running, spinning (I’m an instructor as well) and FOOD (healthier food this time!) I love your recipes and am SO trying some of them out this week! I’ve added you to my blog roll and I’m looking forward to following your posts!
    Have a great day,
    Angela 🙂

Hi! I just found your blog and I had to comment because I have a BS in Nutrition, I am a CPT through AFAA and NASM AND I’m working as a Health Specialist for a coporate health facility 🙂 I haven’t found many blogs I like written by people with an educational background in health and wellness (most I find just have an ‘interest’), so I’ll be following along for sure!!

I love your style of eating/cooking. What are you most conscious about? how many calories something has? how much protein? how much fat? where the ingredients come from?

  21. Abby says:

Hi Namoi! I really love your blog. I check it out everyone in a while and have noticed that you don’t eat dairy much. I just love cheese and dairy and don’t think I could give it up! I also see the dairy group as a healthy part of the diet, and i’m curious as the reason you don’t include dairy in your diet. Do you think its unhealthy or are you lactose intolerant?

Also I’m interested in what you have to say about laurens question!

It is so inspiring to see how you have fluctuated throughout life and that you have found your balance with fitness, work and eating healthy. It is great to read that you don’t cut out carbs entirely like a lot of the fitness role models do and I love that you experiment with fun healthy foods, this is one of my favorite things to do too! You are definitely an inspiration, keep up the great work girl!!
