This weeked I tried oysters! This is sort of a big deal for me. You see, I grew up keeping Kosher in my house. We never ate shellfish. It wasn’t until my brother and I were around 12 years old when we were able to ‘experiment’ with non-kosher meats and other fish such as shellfish (shrimp, scallops, lobster, oysters, clams, mussles etc) Because I never grew up eating shellfish, I really was never a huge fan of the slimy fish like oysters, mussles and clams. Well my friends, tonight was the night.
Joes American Bar and Grill is a chain restaurant serving delicious, upscale American syle food and they are known for their seafood. They have a number of different locations in Boston and this one is right on the water in the North End.
I started out with a refreshing glass of Savingnon Blanc. Cool, crips and perfect!
Fully enjoying the moment, weather, wine and company
Not to mention the beautiful views of Boston Harbor!
Can we talk about the amazing Bread. If you have been to Joes before, you know that this bread is absolutely the most amazing crusty on the outside, doughy on the inside loaf…pretty much. Ever. It is always warm and served with whipped butter. I enjoyed a a huge hunk of bread with my wine!
And the star of the show! The oysters were served with horseradish, cocktail sauce, fresh lemon and oyster crackers. They were a bit intimidating to look at, to be honest. I just didn’t try to stare at them too much-they are not the prettiest food up close!
I LOVE shrimp cocktail and we ordered a appetizer of these guys as well. They were huge, plump and juicy. You know when its a fresh shrimp when it has that ‘pop’ in your mouth as soon as you bite into it.
The ugly fish
The pretty fish
I did it! I had two oysters and I really liked them! I liked the second one better than the first. I topped each one with a little bit of cocktail sauce, horseradish and a squeeze of lemon. It was great!! I am so happy I am no longer an oyster virgin!
I was stuffed from the bread and appetizers so for my entree I ordered a steak salad which was served with grilled potatoes and roasted red peppers. It was the perfect amount of food. (I took a picture but it came out extremely blurry) you can imagine a simple greens salad with steak, potatoes and red pepper right?
